What Happens During a Dialysis Session

1
Arrival & Weight Check
You arrive at the centre. Weight is measured to calculate how much fluid to remove during the session. Blood pressure is checked. The technician reviews your status.
⏱ 10–15 minutes
2
Connection to Machine
Needles are inserted into your AV fistula (or catheter used if fistula not ready). Blood lines are connected to the dialysis machine. A single-use dialyser (artificial kidney filter) is used — fresh for every session.
⏱ 15 minutes
3
Dialysis Session
Your blood passes through the dialyser which removes waste products (urea, creatinine), excess potassium, and extra fluid. Clean blood returns to your body. You can rest, sleep, read, or use your phone during the session.
⏱ 3–4 hours
4
Monitoring During Session
Blood pressure, heart rate, and machine parameters monitored every 30 minutes. Technician present throughout. Nephrologist available for any complication — muscle cramps, BP drop, or discomfort.
⏱ Throughout session
5
Disconnection & Post-Session Check
Machine disconnected, needles removed, fistula site compressed to stop bleeding. Final weight, blood pressure, and temperature checked. You wait 15 minutes before leaving. Monthly lab tests done at the centre.
⏱ 20–30 minutes
⚠️

Pericarditis (fluid around heart from kidney failure)

⚠️ Any of these signs = emergency dialysis needed. Call immediately.

AV Fistula — Best Dialysis Access

Before starting regular dialysis, you need vascular access. AV fistula is the gold standard — safest, longest-lasting, and covered under Ayushman Bharat.

🩺
AV Fistula (Best Choice)
Surgically connects artery and vein in your arm. Matures over 6–8 weeks. Lasts many years. Lowest infection risk. Best blood flow for dialysis adequacy.
✅ Ayushman: FREE · Preferred Access
🔗
AV Graft
Synthetic tube connecting artery and vein. Used when fistula is not possible due to poor vessels. Can be used sooner than fistula but has higher infection rate long-term.
When fistula not possible
💊
Temporary Catheter
Inserted into neck or groin vein. Used for emergency dialysis or while fistula matures. Highest infection risk — replaced by fistula as soon as possible.
Emergency / Temporary Only
Plan ahead: AV fistula takes 6–8 weeks to mature before it can be used for dialysis. If your nephrologist says dialysis is coming in the next 3–6 months, get your fistula created now — before you urgently need it. Emergency dialysis through a catheter carries more risk. At Satyadev Hospital Patna, AV fistula surgery is done in collaboration with our surgical team and is covered under Ayushman Bharat. Call 091222 37338.

Dialysis Patient Diet Guide

Diet is as important as dialysis itself. The right food keeps your potassium, phosphorus, and fluid under control between sessions.

❌ Foods to AVOID or LIMIT
✕Banana, coconut, avocado — high potassium
✕Potato, tomato, spinach — high potassium
✕Milk, paneer, cheese — high phosphorus
✕Nuts, seeds, whole grains — high phosphorus
✕Dark colas, packaged juices — high phosphorus
✕Extra salt, pickles, papad — high sodium
✕Excess fluid — only 500mL + urine output per day
✕Painkillers (ibuprofen, diclofenac) — kidney toxic
✅ Foods You CAN Eat
✓Rice, white bread, plain chapati — low phosphorus
✓Apple, grapes, pears — low potassium fruits
✓Cabbage, cauliflower, beans (boiled) — leached vegetables
✓Egg white — good protein, low phosphorus
✓Fish, chicken (moderate portions) — good protein
✓Cucumber, lettuce — low potassium vegetables
✓Boiling vegetables and discarding water reduces potassium
✓Prescribed phosphate binders with meals — take as directed
Important: Dialysis patients actually need MORE protein (1.2g/kg/day) than pre-dialysis CKD patients — because dialysis removes some protein. Do not follow a low-protein diet if you are on regular dialysis unless your nephrologist specifically advises it. Our dietician at Satyadev Hospital Patna provides personalised diet counselling at every monthly review. Call 091222 37338.
